Role Overview

The Lead Geotechnical Engineer will provide specialized expertise in subsurface investigation, geological risk assessment, and geotechnical design for Pumped Storage Projects. The role focuses on deep-seated and pit-type powerhouse design, underground structure execution, slope stability analysis, and risk mitigation for complex subsurface conditions — all critical to the technical integrity and schedule performance of PSP projects.

Key Sector Exposure – Hydro & Pumped Storage

  • Design and execution of deep-seated and pit-type powerhouses in hydroelectric and PSP projects.
  • Geological and geotechnical investigations for large hydro or PSP infrastructure (>200 MW / >500 MW).
  • Slope stability analysis for dam abutments, powerhouse excavations, and access roads.
  • Underground works including tunnel excavation, cavern design, and rock support design.
  • Subsurface risk assessment and mitigation for complex geological conditions.
  • Review of contractor geotechnical submittals, instrumentation plans, and monitoring data.
  • Support for DPR geotechnical chapters, geological risk registers, and site investigation reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise geological and geotechnical investigations for pumped storage projects.
  • Provide geotechnical inputs for powerhouse design including deep-seated and pit-type configurations.
  • Perform and review slope stability analyses for powerhouse excavations, dam abutments, and project site areas.
  • Develop rock mass characterization and classification for underground structures including tunnels and caverns.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on underground excavation methodologies, tunnel support design, and cavern construction.
  • Review drill-and-blast plans, shotcrete design, and rock bolt patterns for compliance with geotechnical conditions.
  • Monitor and interpret geotechnical instrumentation data including convergence, piezometers, and extensometers.
  • Develop and maintain geotechnical risk registers identifying key subsurface risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Provide geotechnical inputs for powerhouse layout optimization, foundation design, and underground structure alignment.
  • Support value engineering exercises to optimize foundation and underground structure designs.
  • Coordinate with civil design team to ensure geotechnical assumptions are properly embedded in structural designs.

Stakeholder & Consultant Management

  • Act as the primary geotechnical interface between internal engineering teams, project management, and external stakeholders.
  • Review, validate, and provide direction on consultant deliverables including site investigation reports, geotechnical models, and design recommendations.
  • Drive regular technical review meetings with consultants, EPC contractors, and project stakeholders to track progress and resolve challenges.
